Mnemba Island Snorkeling Experience

Your private guide and boat will whisk you away on a 30-minute ride from Matemwe Beach to Mnemba Island, often mistakenly called an atoll, but truly a hidden gem in the sea.

This secluded island, surrounded by a vast coral reef several kilometers wide, is a protected marine reserve and one of the most sought-after snorkeling destinations in Zanzibar.

Why is it so popular? The shallow waters, ranging from 2 to 4 meters deep, are teeming with life. In just a few feet of water, you'll spot Moorish idols, blue tangs, snappers, clownfish, and a dazzling array of colorful, well-preserved corals. However, it's important to note that some parts of the reef have been damaged by rising water temperatures, coral bleaching, storms, and human impact.

Please be mindful: Corals are highly sensitive to sunscreen chemicals, so instead of applying lotion, protect yourself with clothing. Your experienced guide will take you to the most pristine spots, ensuring these delicate ecosystems are preserved. Prepare to be awe-struck by the sheer beauty and diversity beneath the surface.

In addition to the fish and vibrant corals, keep an eye out for blue starfish, Red-knobbed starfish, and the fearsome crown-of-thorns starfish—a coral-eating, venomous species.

Your snorkeling adventure will begin directly from the boat, just a few hundred meters off the island's shore. Note that Mnemba Island is private, with access restricted to guests of the exclusive resort, where prices start at $1000 per person. Be sure to follow your guide’s instructions closely—setting foot on the island itself could result in a hefty fine.

As you explore the reef, there's a good chance you'll encounter dolphins, who frequent these waters and sometimes swim alongside divers.

If you're lucky, you might even spot green turtles making their way to the beach to nest.

After your extraordinary snorkeling experience, you’ll be taken to a nearby sandbank for a relaxing, delicious seafood lunch.
